Warning letters for GDPR violations have increased steadily in recent years. A prominent example is the wave of warnings over the unlawful use of Google Fonts in the summer of 2022. Although some of those warnings were not lawful, they were based on a decision by the Munich Regional Court from January 2022. In addition, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled at the end of 2022 that consumer associations are generally entitled to issue warnings for GDPR violations. These (and other) court decisions triggered further waves of warnings. EU-wide GDPR fines reached a new record of €1.2 billion in 2024. Any business that fails to meet its legal obligations can be affected.
